8 General Guidelines for writing Web content
Resource Center Website Design General Guidelines
Websites are usually scanned not read unless the content is meant to educate – like this article. When designing your website, we at Small Biz Express recommend using the following guidelines for content writing
  1. Less is more: Keep your website content crisp, short and optimized.

  2. Focus on the benefits: What’s in it for the readers? Your website content should convey the benefits available for your targeted readers on your website.

  3. Keep the language simple: Your website design process is not the time to demonstrate your mastery over English language. In your Avoid using words that force users to refer a dictionary in your optimized content writing.

  4. Recognize the omnipresence of web: Your audience can be from anywhere. Avoid using any regional references. For instance, if you own a travel site, avoid using regional English slang – your audience could be from anywhere.

  5. Avoid technical jargon: This is a mistake often made. Avoid inbred language or even language internally used in the company within your website’s content.

  6. Keep the font large: You are better off keeping fonts on the larger side during website design. Baby boomers are a big part of web audience and in any case, people have different screen resolutions.

  7. Avoid long pages: Because web does not have the physical limit imposed by paper, avoid going on and on. Create multiple pages to minimize scrolling.

  8. Test, test, test: Present the same optimized content differently to test user behavior. Ensure you have the same content represented in at least two different forms to see format what appeals to the readers on your website.
