Small Biz Express has redesigned many websites for clients who were not satisfied with their previous small business web designs. Based on our experience, here are some tips to improve small business web design and address some of the common issues:
Small Business Web Design guideline 3: Dark fonts, light backgrounds!
Amongst the worst practices in web design is using “dark text on dark background” and “light text on light background”. Reverse font (light fonts on dark backgrounds) is visually distracting and reduces readability dramatically. Light on dark fonts usually look good for a few minutes but have been shown to have lower readability. Most often, web designers, for want of creating something new, use light text on dark backgrounds. This may work for headlines or to highlight certain text but on the whole, where ease of reading is concerned, “dark on light” text is definitely more preferred. For example, look at Apple.com. A company that has defined coolness, Apple follows dark fonts on light backgrounds in its web design most consistently. Dark font on a light background surpass reverse font when it comes to visual intensity.
What makes a small business web design better than others? Experts say its ease of use and readability. Text is easiest to read when there is a significant distinction or contrast between the written content and the background. Light text on a dark background offers good contrast, but dark text on a light background stands out better. If you want to make sure users read your text, use dark fonts on light backgrounds.
Small business web design, which makes extensive use of pictures or has minimal text content, does well with “light on dark” fonts. This works here because reading is not the chief focus. But websites with text heavy content which feature news or blogs do better with dark fonts on light backgrounds. Dark text on light back ground is better suited for long reads as it maintains excellent contrast and readability. Another concern is font color. From a design perspective, use of red font is a big no-no, as it is jarring and harsh whereas, a black or blue font would have a more positive impact. For example, we at SmallBizExpress.com had a choice of colors while designing our website and we decided to go with black and blue font.
Eventually it’s not just one design element that make good small business web design - many things have to come together for a web design to work well-but font color and size play a major role. It’s taken a while but good contemporary web design practices now largely prefer dark font on light backgrounds as a standard.
